SEPTEMBER 27 READING…JEREMIAH 3-4 & 1 THESSALONIANS 2
Jeremiah is called the weeping prophet, because just like Habakkuk he was called to speak the judgment of God to a people who would not listen. Jeremiah’s call from God is something like this, “Jeremiah, I am going to reveal what is about to happen to you…I am going to put my words in your mouth and your spirit so that you have to speak them…and Jeremiah know this, the people will not listen to anything you say…as a matter of fact, because you say it they will do the opposite. God still gave Judah time to repent through Jeremiah’s message…but they would not. So Judah will be overthrown in horrible ways, and Jeremiah must speak the truth to the people, even though it breaks his heart. Warning after warning, from prophet after prophet…and still they will not listen and heed the voice of the Lord. It sounds so much like our day. People think they don’t need the Lord, so they live in abominable sin…and all the while judgment is eminent. Paul reminded the church at Thessalonica of his faithfulness to share God message in word and in action. His heart rejoices that they submitted to God and believed. In our reading we are given two reactions to God’s message…the reaction to his message makes all the difference…to Judah, their reaction brings judgment…to Thessalonica, their reaction brings salvation.
