SEPTEMBER 24 READING…1 TIMOTHY 2
Paul continues to give Timothy, and all pastors instruction on leading the church. Our churches are to be biblical churches…and the only source for a church to find out what a biblical church looks like is the Bible. There is plethora of “how to” books on what the church should be and how it should function, and while they may be of some help, if a church does not follow the Bible concerning who it is and what it does…it is not a biblical church. A biblical church does not change who it is according to the latest fads, or according to the ever-changing societal mores…the biblical church is anchored in the truth of the Word of God. The pastor is to lead the church to be a praying people. We are to pray for those who sit in positions of leadership in the world. This is not a demand to agree with leadership, but it is a command to pray for them. Paul tells us that it is God’s desire that ALL men be saved. So, He sent His Son, Jesus, so that all would have that opportunity for salvation…but, it is up to each of us individually if we will trust in the Lord. We are reminded by Paul that there is only One who is Savior and who stands as the Mediator between God and mankind. Jesus is the only way to salvation…for it is through His sacrifice, and His Resurrection that we can come to salvation…Jesus is the only one who can reconcile sinful people to a holy God. Paul then gives instruction to Timothy about how the church should function, and he appeals to God’s creative order to speak of the distinct roles of men and women in the church. The woman is not to teach or have authority over the men in the church. Paul is speaking here of who is appointed and called of God to be the Pastor/Bishop in the church. He makes it clear that this position is to be held by men only. This does not sit well in today’s society, but if a church wants to be a biblical church it must obey what the Bible says regardless of what the world is saying.
