OCTOBER 8 READING…JEREMIAH 30-31 & PSALM 87 & HEBREWS 8
When God has a plan and purpose, there is nothing in heaven or on earth that can thwart that plan. Judah was in horrible disobedience, but God had a plan for His people and for the land that He gave them. They would go through a time of captivity, but the Lord promised the land would one day be restored. The Lord doesn’t do this because of the goodness of Judah, but for His Name sake. Think about it, our salvation is not based on our goodness, but upon the grace of God and for His Name sake. If the Lord’s blessings were solely contingent upon our actions, or in the Old Testament Judah’s actions, then we would never be blessed. He loves us, and because of that great love He restores His people, and His land, that is the message that Jeremiah had for Judah as they head into seventy years of captivity. The Psalmist tells us that the Lord loves Zion, why? Because this is the city appointed for the coming of Messiah. This is the city of the Lord Jesus Christ. All God’s promises are fulfilled for His people through His Son, Jesus. The writer of Hebrews speaks of the new covenant that the Lord has with His people through Jesus. It is not based upon religion, nor is it based on ethnic background. It is based upon a new heart given to people by God. A heart where the very words of God are written upon it, and permeates every part of the follower of Christ.
