OCTOBER 21 READING…HEBREWS 6

The key to understanding chapter 6 is verses 1 & 2. The writer is moving on from the basic principles, and attempting to move the believer on to deeper understanding. Sadly, the church has been around for 2000 years, and still this passage is mid-taught. Preachers and teachers using these verses to tell people they can lose their salvation. When these passages are about the security of our salvation…and about going on to “perfection”. The writer gives the basics that are true of all genuine believers, and are the basis of our salvation…repentance, faith toward God, baptism, laying on of hands, the resurrection, and God’s judgment. Then he wants to take us deeper.

The writer wants us to know our salvation is secure…for it is impossible for Christ to be crucified over and over again. We are told our salvation is eternal…that which is eternal cannot be temporal. How is this so? It is so, because our salvation is in God’s hands, not ours. No one is powerful enough to take us out of His hands. The writer then encourages believers to continue on in the good work of God…knowing of our security in His salvation. Don’t give up, not be lazy…but be patient, and keep walking in faith. This chapter closes by affirming the promise of God. The writer refers to God’s unconditional covenant with Abraham as an example of His unconditional covenant with us. An unconditional covenant is eternal, and unbreakable. Jesus our High Priest has secured and guaranteed our eternal destiny…and NOTHING can change that for we who are genuinely biblically saved. PRAISE GOD!
