NOVEMBER 29 READING…REVELATION 2
Chapter 2 begins the Lord’s messages to His churches. These churches existed in the time that John wrote Revelation…but the message is timeless, and for all churches. In each letter, except for one Jesus gives a commendation for what they were doing well. To every church, but two, He gives a word of correction. This chapter contains the Lord’s message to four churches. To the church at Ephesus, Jesus is well pleased with their faithfulness, their commitment to the Word of God, and to their rejection of false apostles. Jesus then tells them that though they are faithful, they are also without love. He instructs them to return to the love they once had for God and others. To the church at Smyrna, who was going through great persecution. Jesus has no words of correction, as He reminds them that they are rich in the things that matter. He then call them to be patient and faithful through the persecution they were facing. To the church at Pergamos, Jesus commends them that though they are losing strength, they still hold fast to His Name. He corrects them of their compromises with the enemy of their souls…they had gone the way of Balaam, and practiced the doctrine of the Nicolaitans. To the church at Thyatira, the Lord commends them that their good works continue to grow. He is concerned that they have a woman leader leading people to sexual immorality in the church. Jesus warns them not to allow this. The Lord loves His church…and if something is not right he will always seek to bring correction, while at the same time commending His church for what they do right.
