MAY 9 READING…ACTS 5
It is one thing to lie to other humans, while it is another whole level to lie to the Holy Spirit. While neither is good, the second can bring dire consequences on the liar. The early church was taking care of one another…even selling their property in order to meet the needs of the members of the church. There was a couple who conspired to sell their property and give only a portion to the church, but tell the church that they gave everything. They didn’t have to sell their property, and they didn’t even have to give all the proceeds after selling it…but they did need to be truthful before the Holy Spirit. This corruption came in the church through this couple and the Spirit of God moved quickly to stop the corruption. This couple died, at the hands of the Holy Spirit, for daring to lie and bring corruption in the church. The Lord continued to work great signs through the hands of the Apostles. This infuriated the Jewish religious leaders, so they put the Apostles in jail…but the Lord sent an angel to free the Apostles, leaving the religious leaders in a quandary. The religious leaders then brought in the Apostles, who preached Jesus to them. They warned the Apostles to stop preaching to the people about Jesus. Then one of them stood up and said to let the Apostles preach and if it was not of God their movement would die, but if it was of God, it could not be stopped. The religious leaders beat the Apostles and released them…the Apostles continued to preach Jesus among the people of Jerusalem.
