MAY 27, 2023 ~ THEMATIC JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE

MAY 27 READING…2 SAMUEL 1-3 & PSALM 141

Transition is never easy. Saul has died, and David takes his God given place as king of Israel. The heart of David is amazing, as he genuinely grieves and laments the death of Saul. To David the things that Saul did wrong were in the past, and though Saul had many faults, David gave him respect and honor as the former king of Israel. Not everyone believed David was the rightful king. Abner, Saul’s commander, believed that Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, was to be king…and he made him king. This lead to a brief civil war…which David won. Things fell apart under Ishbosheth, and Abner left him and joined with David. This did not sit well with Joab, David’s commander, so Joab murdered Abner. David mourned Abner as an honorable man…much more than Joab. In Psalm we read a cry out to God to protect from evil, and the wicked deeds of those who hate God. We need this today, so desperately. Just because people are in places of authority, does not mean they are honorable, or deserve their status. Evil is all around us, even from those who were supposed to protect and honorably lead. Like the psalmist, we must keep our eyes on the Lord…He is our only refuge.
