MARCH 3 READING…NUMBERS 1-2 & PSALM 68
The theme of today’s reading is that God knows those who belong to Him. He knows us by name, and He knows the purpose for which he has called us. Even in our wandering, God knows who we are and where we are…though we wander, we never wander beyond His presence. In Numbers we have the first census of Israel to be taken…this one occurs at Mount Sinai. All twelve tribes are counted…with special attention given to Ephraim and Manasseh, as they would receive a portion of the allotment of land as the sons of Joseph. The Lord places leaders over the armies of each tribe and the number of their troops. The Lord knows His own, and He is intimately involved in their lives.
The Psalmist praises the Lord and the way He knows His people, and the way He watches over them. He declares the Lord is overall things…and He is like a father to the fatherless. He proclaims that God is sovereign, and pours His blessings out on His people. The Lord knows those who belong to Him…He protects them…He blesses them with life…and He pours out His blessings upon them. God will defeat His enemies, even while blessing His people. God is above all things…all kingdoms and kings…above all powers…and ultimately all will answer to Him. He will always give to His people all they need…for He knows and loves His own.
