JUNE 21 READING…1 KINGS 21 & PSALM 94 & MARK 2
Ahab and his wife Jezebel conspired to take a vineyard from a man, Naboth…they did this simply because Ahab wanted the vineyard, because of its proximity to his own land. Jezebel had two scoundrels to falsely accuse Naboth of blaspheming God and the king. Naboth was stoned for his blasphemy. Elijah was moved by God to come to Ahab and tell him that because of what he had done, dogs would lick his blood, and dogs would eat the flesh of his wife, Jezebel. Ahab repented, but his evil would cause his evil sons to suffer the judgment that Elijah had declared. In Psalms, we are reminded that ultimately it is the Lord that will avenge the evil that people do. No one sins with impunity, some might get by with their sin for a season, but ultimately all will stand before God who is the righteous Judge…and there is nothing hidden from Him. In Mark we find the religious leaders, who should have been pointing people to Jesus, actually opposing Jesus and His ministry. Jesus challenged them by referring to them as old wineskins in which no new wine could be placed…for the new wine would burst the old skins. Then the religious leaders saw Jesus’ disciples walking through the field and picking off the grain and eating it. For this they accused the Lord and His disciples of breaking the Sabbath by doing work. Jesus really made them angry by telling them that He was the Lord of the Sabbath. We live in a corrupt world, from political leaders to religious leaders…God knows what is going on. Don’t spend time worried that these evil people are getting away with their evil deeds…God knows, and God will rightly judge them.
