JUNE 19 READING…ROMANS 6
We often speak and sing about the amazing grace of God. This is God freely giving us what we do not deserve. This grace does not give us the license to sin. What an incredibly warped view of our salvation for anyone to say, “well, since my sin is forgiven by Jesus…I will just sin all the more”. Sadly, for many in the Baptist tradition they have been brought up with the saying, “Once saved, always saved”. This makes a nice bumper sticker…but improperly understood it could lead to someone believing they can live anyway they like, and they are good with God. Our salvation does not bring us to the place where we are at liberty to live anyway we like…it allows us to live as the Lord likes. Genuine biblical salvation is eternal salvation…but genuine salvation is always a changing salvation. Jesus never leaves us the way He found us. The Holy Spirit enters our life and He ALWAYS brings change. Paul reminds us in our reading, as he does elsewhere, that we have been crucified with Christ. The old person has been put to death. Since we have been put to death with Christ, we have also been raised to life in Christ Jesus…the new person we are is not the same as the old person we were. We now live as a people who have been made righteous before God through Jesus. Paul tells us that since we have been changed by the power of the Holy Spirit through salvation…we now are to walk and live in that righteousness. Our practice ought to match our position with God. Christians don’t sin because they have to…we sin because we choose to. We are called to walk a surrendered life to the Holy Spirit…when we do our walk will match our profession of faith.
