JUNE 13 READING…1 KINGS 9-10 & 1 CORINTHIANS 10
The Lord appeared to Solomon after the dedication of the Temple and entered into a covenant with him. It was a conditional covenant like the one the Lord had with David, and similar to the one with Moses. The Lord required that Solomon and his sons obey the Lord and refrain from idolatry, and they would remain on the throne of Israel perpetually. Solomon’s wisdom was so great that people from everywhere came just to hear him speak, even the Queen of Sheba, who praised him greatly. Along with all these visit came great wealth that was given as tribute to Solomon. The question was how would Solomon respond to all this attention and wealth. In 1 Corinthians, Paul warns of what happened to the people who came to freedom with Moses…but then turned to idolatry and perished in the wilderness. Paul warns that we need to flee from all idolatry. He then tells us that our lives are not about our own glory, but we exist for the glory of the Lord. He reminds us that whatever we do, we are to do it for the glory of the Lord. We need to ask ourselves if we are living for our glory, or for the glory of the Lord.
