JULY 7 READINGS...Psalm 92-97
From our reading today, I feel led to use Psalm 96:4 as our focus verse…”For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods.” This moves us to recognize two things. First, who God is…He is great, and He is above all gods. Second, we are called to recognize these truths in our lives and when we do they move us to respond…we are to praise Him greatly, and we are fear the Lord.” From our readings, let’s see how these two truths are continually expressed.
Who is God according to His Holy Word. This is important, because who God is, is not a subjective truth…God is who He is, and who He is, is clearly expressed in His Word. The Lord is King…and He is just in all His ways. God is from everlasting to everlasting…our God is eternal, without beginning and without end. He is mightier than the raging seas…He is our rock and our fortress. The Lord is a great God…and above all other kings. The Lord is amazing in all the He does…He is the Maker of heaven and earth. He is greater than our finite minds could ever comprehend…and if we created a god in our own imaginations, or our own religions, that god would be far less than the one true and living God. God is revealed in His Word…He is not who we want Him to be, or who we imagine Him to be…He is who He is!
Because of who God is, we are called to respond to Him. What does that response look like biblically? The Psalmist tells us. We are called to give thanks to the Lord, and sing praises to the Lord Most High! We are to proclaim His unfailing love and His faithfulness. We should exalt the Lord in all things…and declare His justice. We are to be filled with His joy, simply because we are loved and disciplined by Him. We are to live a life of worship…where we continually bend our knees and bow before our God. Because He is our God we get to sing a new song…for His blessings are new every morning. We get to give God the glory He deserves…and tell all the nations that the Lord reigns. Because we love the Lord we will hate evil…and rejoice and praise His Holy Name! What a blessing it is to be a child of God…many are the benefits and blessings we have because we belong to Him.
