JULY 31, 2023 ~ THEMATIC JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE

JULY 31 READING…1 CHRONICLES 21 & LUKE 19

We all have choices to make. These choices are based upon whose voice are we willing to listen to and obey. There is more than one voice vying for our attention and allegiance. We can listen to the Holy Spirit, we can listen to Satan or one of his demons, we can listen to the world, we can listen to others, or we can listen to ourselves and our flesh. There are always consequences tied to which voice we choose to listen to. For most of David’s rule we find him listening and obeying the Lord…each time the consequences of doing so, brought great blessings to David, and to Israel. In our reading today, we have David listening to Satan, who tempts David to be disobedient to God and do a census. Why is this wrong…could be David was looking to see how powerful Israel was in order to face its enemies, rather than just trust in the Lord…it could have been a matter of personal pride, where David was feeling good about all that “he” had accomplished…or it could have been for some other reason. Regardless, it was disobedient to the Lord, and brought God’s judgment on the people of Israel. The consequences of David’s sin cost others…our sin is never done in a vacuum, and will always affect others. In Luke, we have Zacchaeus who had never in his life followed or listened the Lord…who finally heard Jesus call his name. Zacchaeus heard and heeded Jesus’ voice and the consequence of this, his life was completely changed. We are confronted with choices daily…whose voice are we listening to, whose voice are we obeying. Our choices always result in consequences…either good or bad.

Please share your thoughts.
