JULY 25 READING…1 CORINTHIANS 16
Paul gives instruction to the church concerning the taking of offerings. Notice the instruction includes the “first day” of the week…the church clearly met on Sunday. They did this in celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection and His fulfillment of the Old Testament law. There is not some nefarious cause or reason for the church meeting on Sunday rather than Saturday as the Jews did. The offering was to be taken to minister to the other believers, especially those who lost everything because they became followers of Jesus. Paul shares with the church his plans to come and visit them, and hopes to spend some time with the church. Paul commends the young pastor Timothy to the church, and encourages them to welcome him and to receive him as they would Paul. His final encouragement includes a call to keep watch, to stand fast, and be brave and strong. This was no time for compromises, or being filled with fear. They were to stand in the faith they had received. Paul sends them greeting from the other Christian churches where he was ministering.
