JULY 18 READING…1 CHRONICLES 4 & LUKE 6
I guarantee you the the readings in 1 Chronicles will become tedious…and you may even wonder why all these names are in this book. They set the background for the history we read in the Old Testament, and they give us an exact line to the prophetic promises of God concerning His perfect timing in bringing the Messiah. Granted, there are names that seem to have no direct purpose in either of these things, but they do give an unbreakable line in God’s plan. In Luke Jesus continues to deal with the descendants of the people listed in Chronicles. They do not recognize Jesus as the promised Messiah, nor do they agree with His application of Scripture…especially where the Sabbath is concerned. Jesus chooses His disciples, and the crowds following Him begin to grow. It’s in this chapter we have condensed version of the Sermon on the Mount, that is three chapters long in Matthew. In this sermon Jesus turns the world upside down for those who would follow Him…in that we are not to live like the world, we are to live like followers of Jesus.
