JULY 17 READING…1 CORINTHIANS 10
Idolatry is abhorrent to God. It is the first of His commandments…“No other gods before me”. It is especially bad when those who know the Lord either continue, or go back to, idolatry. Lost people practice idolatry because it is all they have…saved people practice idolatry because they willfully disobey God. Paul was certainly concerned about the church at Corinth and their idolatry. They were a people previously steeped in polytheism…and spend mush of their time worshiping their false gods and idols. When they came to Christ, Paul told them they were to leave their idols and worship the Lord alone. In the Old Testament the Israelites paid a high price for going into idolatry…many times this was referred to as spiritual adultery. They were to love and worship only God, but they stepped out on Him and joined themselves to false gods. Paul instructs us to flee from idolatry…have nothing whatsoever to do with it. We are called to live our lives so that everything we do brings glory to God. The Lord is not glorified when we split our affections and worship with anything else. It is true that few of us have little stone or wood idols we bow down to today…ours are fancier, shinier, and much more expensive…they also take more of our time than we are willing to give our God. Flee from all idols, and return to your first love, the Lord Jesus Christ.
