JULY 15, 2024 ~ A WALK THROUGH THE NEW TESTAMENT

JULY 15 READING…1 CORINTHIANS 8

There is only one God. He is the Triune God of the Scripture. From Genesis to Revelation the one true God is revealed as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit…not three Gods, but one God in three persons. Our finite minds can not fully grasp this truth, nor do human words ever fully describe the fullness of the Trinity. We don’t figure out God…we are not that smart, nor are we that spiritual. We can know God because of His grace and mercy He reveals Himself to us. Paul in teaching the church in Corinth wanted to tell them that there is one God, and that the idols that were so prevalent in that city were not gods at all. For the pagans there were many gods, but they were not really gods. They were empty pieces of wood and stone that had no life or power. But how does a Christian live in a pagan society where polytheism and idolatry are so prevalent? This is not only a question for Paul’s day, but for ours also. Paul was not intimidated by the false gods of paganism, because he knew they were nothing, and that there is only one true God. What Paul was concerned with was those in the church who had not grow to this truth, and those who were considering coming to Christ who were still in bondage to idols. So Paul, though he knew these idols were nothing, refrained from having anything to do with them for the sake of those who had not yet been set free from this false teaching. He was patient with new believers, and those who had yet to become believers, until they could come to a place of being discipled in the way of the truth. We too need to watch out for those young in the faith, and guard what we involve ourselves in for their sake and for the kingdom’s sake.
