JULY 13 READING…MALACHI 3-4 & LUKE 1
The prophet Malachi foretells of the coming Messiah. As we read the last two chapters of his book we see that the primary purpose of his prophecy deals with the second advent of Christ. The prophet speaks about the fact that the wicked will not be able to endure the day of the coming of Messiah. For believers and followers of the Lord the coming of Christ will be a day of great reward. Malachi tells us that “Elijah” (God’s messenger) will precede the second coming of Messiah. Luke’s Gospel opens with the preparation for the first advent of Christ. The Lord’s plan in Christ’s first coming is to have a messenger precede Him, just as He will have a messenger precede Jesus’ second coming. The messenger of God in the first coming of Christ is John the baptizer…who is actually the cousin of Jesus. Both Zacharias (John’s father) and Mary are visited by angels to declare to them God’s plan to use them in the first coming of the Messiah. John is born, and his father, Zacharias, proclaims God’s great purpose for John the baptizer. We look back to the fulfillment of God’s Word in the first advent of Jesus, and we see the amazing fulfillment of God’s truth…this enables us to be confident in the promise of God’s Word concerning the second coming of Christ.
