JANUARY 4 READING…MATTHEW 4
After being baptized by John, Jesus went into the wilderness to spend time with His Father, as His earthly ministry was about to begin. It is good to spend alone time with God in order to have Him prepare us for what He has called us to. There is one who will always interrupt our time with God…that is Satan. He did the same with Jesus, as while Jesus was with His Father, Satan tempted Him…these temptations were an attempt to get Jesus to forego His reason for coming. If Satan could entice Jesus and keep Him from obeying His Father in all things, then the cross would become meaningless…there would be no redemption of sinful mankind. Some say that the temptations were recorded in order that we would know that Jesus could not sin…I believe they are recorded to show us that Jesus would not sin. If there was no possibility of Jesus giving into temptation, then there was no real temptation. The Bible makes it clear that Jesus was tempted in every way we are, yet He never sinned. After overcoming Satan’s temptations Jesus begins His earthly ministry, that would be relatively short in time…yet is would be eternal in impact. Jesus calls His first disciples. I have always found it interesting the “kind” of people Jesus called as His disciples…I still find it interesting the kind of people Jesus calls, especially when I look in the mirror. Jesus begins His ministry in the region of the Galilee…this is where He would do most of His ministry, along with a few trips to Jerusalem.
