FEBRUARY 29 READING…MARK 16
We finish reading the Gospel of Mark today. Jesus has been crucified, they took His lifeless body off the cross and placed Him in a borrowed tomb. There was not time because of the schedule of Passover week for them to fully prepare His body after His death. So, the plan was that on the day after the weekly Sabbath the women would go to the tomb and take care of the Lord’s body. They were concerned about who would roll the stone away from the entrance, but when they arrived at the tomb the stone was already moved, and an angel met them and declared that Jesus was not there, for He has risen. Mark tells us that the risen Lord appeared to Mary, to the two on the road, and to the disciples as they continued to hide. Jesus gave His followers their commission…to share His message of salvation to the entire world and to make others disciples when they had responded in faith to Jesus. Mark closes his account of the Gospel of Jesus with the Lord ascending to heaven, as the followers of Jesus continued their God-given work, as the Holy Spirit was manifested among them. As far as what we are called to do today, it is the same as it has always been…it is the same commission given to the apostles of Christ. We have our marching orders…time to get marching.
