FEBRUARY 14 READING…MARK 5
In Mark 5 Jesus serves several people in a variety of miraculous ways. He casts out demons…He heals a lady with an issue of blood for many years…and He raises a little girl that has died back to life. A man was possessed by demons that caused him to have almost superhuman strength. Yet because these demons actually hated the man, they would cause him to harm himself. These demons, called legion, needed a place to live, as they are evil spirits roaming the earth looking for a host to live in. They took up residence in this man, but when Jesus came and cast them out, they did not want to be consigned to the abyss, so they beg Jesus to cast them into a heard of swine. It makes perfect sense that these unclean spirits would be cast into the unclean animals. The pigs, once indwelt with the demons, ran into the Sea of Galilee and drowned. Some might ask, “What happened to the demons”? Since demons need a host to live in, and these were not cast into the abyss…they would have roamed the earth until they found another person to possess. One of the realities of having the Holy Spirit is that you cannot be possessed by demons. Jesus then was walking through the crowded where He is approached about a very sick little girl, and while this is happening a lady reaches out and touches Jesus’ garment, and is healed immediately of an issue of blood that she had for years. After that happened a servant from the little girl’s house comes up and basically tells everyone that there is no need for Jesus any longer, for the girl had died. Jesus, who is the Giver of life, goes and raises the girl back to life. Jesus was involved in people’s lives, where they were, but He never left them as they were when He met them. He does the same today.
