FEBRUARY 11 READINGS…Exodus 32:1-34:35.
How quickly the people forget the One True God. Israel had seen and benefited from the work of God in their midst. They had seen Him open the Red Sea…they had seen the cloud and pillar of fire…they had received quail and manna from the Lord, and in a short time without Moses they begged and demanded Aaron make them a god from Egypt. How it must grieve the heart of God that we, like the Israelites, forget the goodness of God, and move onto other things (gods). Seems far too often we would rather have the temporal, powerless, things of this world than the eternal things that come from God. This also brings the Lord’s anger against the people, and the Lord tests the heart of Moses by saying He would destroy the people and raise up a people from Moses. Moses proves that His heart is for God, for the plan of God, and for the people of God…as he pleads for the people.
There is always punishment for the sin of rebellion and idolatry. The people are punished for their sin, and 3000 die for their idolatry. Moses continues to intercede on behalf of the people before God and in this we have the wonderful encounter where the Lord allows Moses to see Him like no other person had seen Him. Even in this the Lord shields Moses, for if he were to see the full glory of God, it would have destroyed him. After Moses had spent time in the presence of the Lord his countenance was changed…the glory of the Lord was all over him…even to the place that when the people saw him they were filled with fear. The readings close with God giving further instruction to His people through Moses.
Please share any insights you received in the readings. May we all learn from the fickle nature of the Israelites, and look at ourselves, that we would walk in worship and service of the Lord all the days of our lives.
