AUGUST 20 READING…2 CHRONICLES 35-36 & PSALM 117-118
In Chapter 35 we have the good king Josiah re-institute Passover. The people were revived with the reading of the Law of God, and with a king who had a heart after the Lord. Josiah chose to go into battle against Egypt who was going to fight another enemy. He is fatally wounded in the battle. Chapter 36 moves very quickly through four kings, none of them did what was right in the sight of the Lord. The nation continued to decay, and fall away from God. Finally, Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon comes against Judah for the third time, and this time he destroys Jerusalem, and takes away to captivity all but the old and infirmed. 2 Chronicles ends with the statement that Cyrus would allow the captives to return to Jerusalem. Both of the Psalms we read are praises to the Lord for His goodness to His people. Psalm 118, particularly, reminds us that our salvation is found only in the Lord. He is a gracious and merciful God. It talks about how blessed a nation is who has God as their Lord. Finally, we have a prophetic verse for the day when Messiah Jesus would enter Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, when the Psalmist says…”Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord”. Be warned, evil leaders ruin a nation…and our only salvation is in the Lord!
