AUGUST 13 READINGS...Jeremiah 31:15-40 & 49:34-51:14
Today’s reading has two powerful truths revealed that from the natural eye could not possibly be seen or understood. These two messages are opposed to each other.
The first is that captive Judah, who has no hope, has a message from the God of hope, that they have a future. They had gotten to the place of hopelessness and despair. They could not be comforted because of their dire situation. They have been taken out of the land, and their beautiful city and Temple would be destroyed. Where could they find hope? From the same One we find hope from…the Lord. We live in a time of great trouble, where our world is falling apart. Where will we find hope? From our Lord, who has already promised us redemption, and relief from these troubled times. Ultimately, we will get to see our salvation…just as Judah would see their restoration. In the midst of troubled times the Lord never forgets His own…nor does He make His eternal promises invalid. Praise the Lord, for He is The Promise Keeper. Don’t trust your eyes…trust the Lord!
Second, Jeremiah prophesies the utter destruction and downfall of Babylon. It is important that we understand that this prophecy came at the height of Babylon’s power. No one could conceive such a downfall. I have no doubt that had the Babylonians heard the words of Jeremiah they would have laughed at him and mocked him. They would have considered him a crazy man. Yet we know from history that the fall of Babylon happened just the way Jeremiah prophesied it would. The pride of Babylon led them to a false sense of security…much like the pride of our country has led us to the same thing. Some think that some businesses, some countries, some systems, and some religions are too big to fail. We need to understand that there is no such thing. Everything will fall that is not held together by God. Don’t let your pride lead you to a false sense of security…the only secure place is in Christ alone.
Please share your thoughts from today’s readings. Stay humble before God…put your trust in Christ Jesus alone. In the Lord is the only safe and secure place.
