April 6 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: PHILIPPIANS 4:1-7

True happiness is the product of righteousness. Unrighteousness brings misery and torment to our souls. It would be untrue to say that sin has no allure and that it does not bring pleasure...but that pleasure is only for a moment. The lie of sin is that it will give us both what we want and what we need. It promises fulfillment...it promises satisfaction...it promises happiness. However, it is unable to deliver on any of its promises. We are easily attracted to the green grass in someone else's yard...we give into temptation only to find that the grass has weeds in it too. Sin makes doing wrong look appealing...that's the temptation...but it lies, and rather than good, sin leads to death.

The search for happiness by most people leads them away from God rather than to God. The world promises everything under the sun to tempt us in order that we might find happiness. It doesn't take long in watching television before we see a plethora of commercials promising that if you will buy their product you will finally be happy. People run to and fro in life seeking all those things that they believe will fulfill their need to be happy. We spend our time, our resources and our energy, in pursuit of happiness...only to be disappointed. The Scripture tells us that it is as we seek righteousness the result will be true happiness. Jesus said..."Blessed (happy) are those who seek after righteousness..." It is only as we have peace with God through Jesus...and as we are made righteous through the finished work of Christ...and as we walk in His righteousness by the power of the Holy Spirit, that we can know true happiness. Happiness that brings true fulfillment... true satisfaction...and enjoys every promise of God in Christ Jesus
