APRIL 22 READING…JOHN 13
The disciples of Jesus had to sense that something had changed dramatically. They had seen a lot in the last three years, but now things were different. They had celebrated the Passover with Jesus before, but not exactly like this. John records for us the meeting of the disciples and Jesus in a second story room in a portion of the city of Jerusalem known a Mount Zion. This will be Jesus’ last time to teach them about what it really means to be His disciples and to really minister in His name. Jesus begins the evening by washing the feet of the disciples…this was supposed to be the work of the servant in the room, but here was the Lord doing the work of a servant. Jesus teaches us that genuine leadership in the kingdom of God is seen in our willingness to serve one another. Jesus demonstrated this to His disciples by washing their dirty feet. Jesus again tells them that He is about to leave them, and in doing so reminds them of His commandment for them…that they should love one another. Jesus tells Peter of the fact of his coming denial of Jesus, even though Peter claims that he would never deny Jesus, and would actually die first. Yes, things have changed and now the Lord is preparing the disciples for what they were about to experience.
