APRIL 18 READING…JOSHUA 1-2 & PSALM 1 & PROVERBS 18
Whose voice shall we listen to? The theme of today’s reading is a matter of choice as to which voices are we going to trust, and whose voice are we going to reject. The Lord spoke to Joshua and told him to be “strong and courageous”, for the Lord was about to do incredible things among His people. Joshua is the new leader of Israel, he is appointed by God to take the people into the land of promise…he will need to listen and obey God in all things. The Lord has promised them victory if they would but listen and heed His voice. Earlier the people reject the advice of Joshua and Caleb, and they wandered for forty years…now they would need to hear Joshua, believe he is God’s man, and follow him no matter what. We even have Rahab the harlot, who lives in Jericho, who is listening to the Lord, rather than the people of Jericho. In Psalm we are told not to walk in the counsel of the ungodly, but to surround ourselves by people who listen to and follow God. We are to stay tied to God’s Word, for through His Word He speaks to us, and He guides us. In Proverbs we are advised not even listen to our own “inner self”, but to receive the wisdom of the Lord…and to walk in that wisdom. A key verse we need to remember from our reading at all times is Proverbs 18:10, “The Name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”
